In order to work in the United States you must apply for and receive a social security number from the Social Security Administration. You will need to complete your program check-in within 72 hours of arrival in the USA. 7-10 days after successful program check in you will need to go to the nearest social security office to apply.
It is imperative that you bring with you to the U.S.A. a document over one year old! The Social Security Administration requires at least one document to be over one year old in order to receive a social security number (passport, birth certificate, international driver's license). The document must be in English, however if it is not, the consulate may translate it. It is recommended this be taken care of before arriving to the U.S. because not every country has an embassy in Washington D.C. or the consulate might be out of the country.
For more information or to locate the Social Security office nearest to where you will be working, you can go to the Social Security Administration's website at www.ssa.gov
By January 31st you should receive a W-2 form from each of your employers. This form states how much money you made for the time you were here and how much money in taxes were taken out of your paychecks. If you do not receive a W-2 by February 15th please contact the office.
In order to get your money back you must fill out the proper forms (1040 EZ NR) that can be found at www.irs.gov. Tax returns are due April 15th for federal and state of every year.
